Generation of Attosecond Electron Bunches

چکیده
Ultra-fast science is an important new research frontier that is driving the development of novel sources for generation of extremely short x-ray and electron pulses. Recent advances in femtosecond lasers have stimulated development of femtosecond x-ray sources that allow the study of matter at the time scale shorter than period of oscillations of atoms in molecules, ∼ 100 fs. The next breakthrough would be a source of electron pulses comparable with atomic periods ω−1 ∼ 100 attosecond (10−16 s), where ω is a transition frequency between atomic levels. This will open qualitatively new class of phenomena based on the interaction of atomic electrons in the medium with a collective electric field of electron pulses and not with their individual electrons. For example, one can expect coherent ionization losses that are proportional to a square number of electrons in the microbunch, phase synchronized excitation of medium followed by its relaxation with a radiation of a single-cycled optical pulse, excitation of entanglement states in the medium of atoms with few valence electrons, and possibly other new phenomena, yet to be identified. Simple estimation of coherent ionization losses shows that a 100 MeV, 100 attosecond electron pulse containing 10 electrons will lose its total energy after propagating only ∼ 200μm through liquid hydrogen. This is approximately 10 times shorter stoping range than it is for a long (on atomic scale) electron bunch.

Relativistic attosecond electron bunches from laser-illuminated droplets.
The generation of relativistic attosecond electron bunches is observed in three-dimensional, relativistic particle-in-cell simulations of the interaction of intense laser light with droplets. The electron bunches are emitted under certain angles which depend on the ratios of droplet radius to wavelength and plasma frequency to laser frequency. The mechanism behind the multi-MeV attosecond elect...

متن کاملGenerating ultrarelativistic attosecond electron bunches with laser wakefield accelerators.
Femtosecond electron bunches with ultrarelativistic energies were recently generated by laser wakefield accelerators. Here we predict that laser wakefield acceleration can generate even attosecond bunches, due to a strong chirp of the betatron frequency. We show how the bunch duration scales with the acceleration parameters and that, after acceleration, the bunches can propagate over many tens ...

We present a study of direct laser driven electron acceleration and scaling of attosecond bunch compression in unbound vacuum. Simple analytical expressions and detailed three-dimensional numerical calculations including space charge and non-paraxial laser fields reveal the conditions for compression to attosecond electron sheets. Intermediate emittance minima suitable for brilliant x-ray gener...
متن کاملAttosecond Control of Relativistic Electron Bunches using Two-Colour Fields
Energy coupling during relativistically intense laser-matter interactions is encoded in the attosecond motion of strongly driven electrons at the pre-formed plasma-vacuum boundary. Studying and controlling this motion can reveal details about the microscopic processes that govern a vast array of light-matter interaction physics and applications. These include research areas right at the forefro...
متن کاملGeneration of attosecond x-ray pulses with a multi-cycle two-color ESASE scheme
Generation of attosecond x-ray pulses is attracting much attention within the x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) user community. Several schemes have been proposed based on manipulations of electron bunches with extremely short laser pulses. In this paper, we extend the attosecond twocolor ESASE scheme proposed by Zholents et al. to the long optical cycle regime using a detuned second laser and a ...
